Brahmaputra Upstream | Guwahati To Kaziranga
4 Nights / 5 Days
The Assam Despatch 2A: Silk & Rhinos is a 4-night, 5-day Brahmaputra River cruise aboard the ABN Sukapha, offering a perfect balance of Assam’s cultural richness and its extraordinary wildlife. Beginning in Guwahati, guests are welcomed aboard and introduced to Assam’s heritage at Sualkuchi, the famed silk-weaving village where age-old traditions of spinning, dyeing, and weaving Muga silk are preserved. The journey continues with a visit to the revered Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill, an important spiritual centre that blends ancient traditions and draws pilgrims from across India. Leisurely cruising upstream allows time to absorb the peaceful scenery of riverside villages, farmlands, and forested hills, complemented by enriching experiences such as guided village walks and an onboard Indian cooking demonstration. The highlight is an excursion into Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s premier wildlife reserves, known for its population of one-horned rhinoceroses, Royal Bengal tigers, elephants, swamp deer, and abundant birdlife. Often likened to Africa’s Serengeti for its biodiversity, Kaziranga provides unforgettable safari experiences. With its mix of cultural immersion, spiritual encounters, scenic river journeys, and thrilling wildlife safaris, this cruise offers a compact yet immersive introduction to the natural and cultural treasures of Assam.

Today you are picked up from Guwahati Airport or Hotel and transferred to the cruise at Pandu Port. Relish lunch on board as the vessel cruises downstream towards Sualkuchi. In the afternoon, take a guided walk through Sualkuchi, a lively town renowned as the hub of Assamese silk production. Visit traditional weaving workshops and observe the complete process of silk making—from rearing cocoons and spinning threads to dyeing and hand-weaving them into elegant mekhela chadars (the traditional two-piece attire worn by Assamese women). The day concludes with the cruise sailing upstream to dock near the iconic Saraighat Bridge.

This morning, take a scenic drive up Nilachal Hill to visit the sacred Kamakhya Temple, one of India’s most revered centres of tantric worship. Dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya, known as the goddess of desire and the granter of wishes, the temple represents a unique blend of Aryan and non-Aryan traditions in Assam. Stroll around the temple’s exteriors, joining pilgrims from across the country, and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere filled with sights, sounds, and spiritual energy. Afterwards, return to the vessel and continue cruising upstream towards Mayong.

This morning, the cruise continues to Silghat. After lunch, set out on a drive to Kaziranga National Park for a jeep safari in its Western Range.
Spanning about 430 sq. km, Kaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its remarkable biodiversity. It is home to the world’s largest population of Indian One-Horned Rhinoceroses and the Indian Wild Water Buffalo. The park also boasts the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers, with approximately one tiger every five square kilometres.
With its marshy wetlands and dense elephant grass, the park provides a thriving habitat for Indian elephants, Indian bison, swamp deer, and Capped Langurs.
Often compared to Africa’s Serengeti for its abundant wildlife, Kaziranga is also a haven for bird enthusiasts. Bird species here include the Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black-shouldered Kite, White-tailed Eagle, Himalayan Griffon, and many more.

This morning, say goodbye to the crew and fellow travelers before departing for the 4-hour drive to Guwahati Airport. Alternatively, arrangements can be made for a 40-minute transfer to Kaziranga or a 2.5-hour transfer to Jorhat Airport, depending on your onward travel plans.
This itinerary, including the cruise schedule and approximate driving times, is dependent on river and weather conditions. Access to Kaziranga National Park may be limited during periods of high water, as its low-lying grasslands can become inaccessible when the river is at or near flood level.
